Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2023, the turkey meat and offal market in Australia and New Zealand experienced fluctuations in volume. Domestic production gradually declined from 23 040 t in 2018 to 21 601 t in 2023. The market size, after a dip in 2020, recovered to 21 771 t in 2022 before moderating to 20 928 t in 2023. This overall trajectory was accompanied by a significant expansion of imports, which more than quadrupled from 2019 levels, partially offsetting the lower production volumes.

Shifting consumer preferences towards healthier protein options and a strong demand for high-quality, locally-sourced meat products supported domestic consumption from 2022 onward. This sustained demand contributed to rising import volumes to supplement local supply. Concurrently, innovations in packaging, such as vacuum and skin packs, and growing consumer acceptance of frozen turkey products diversified market offerings. However, a sharp increase in exports in 2023 reduced the volume available for domestic consumption, contributing to that year's market size contraction.

Advancements in freezing technology improved the quality and shelf life of frozen turkey meat, aligning with busier lifestyles and demand for convenience. While consumer preference for fresh products remained strong, these developments supported the frozen segment. Seasonal demand patterns, particularly around year-end holidays, continued to influence market dynamics throughout the period.
