By 2024, several developments began shaping the market. Hot climate in the Middle East boosted demand for iced tea, which already held 66% of the market. The Dubai Multi Commodities Centre attracted 50 new tea companies, expanding the player base. Saudi Arabia's tea imports rose by 19% in value over 15 months, reflecting strong domestic demand, while Morocco became the largest importer of Chinese tea, taking 80.6 thousand tons. These factors pointed toward continued growth in consumption and market activity.

After two years of decline, MENA's tea production volume increased in 2020. Production reached 94.1 K t, marking a modest 3.6% rise compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production decreased by 6.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of 2.2%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 90.8 K t, which also saw the largest decline of 8.5%.

Exports tea from MENA

Exports in kind, K t

In 2020, tea exports from MENA totaled 72.1 K t, representing a significant 33.3% increase from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports grew by 9.9%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 3.2%. The lowest export volume was in 2019 at 54.1 K t, which experienced the largest decline of 34.1%, while the peak was in 2018 at 82.1 K t.

The structure of tea exports in kind from 2017 to 2020 shows a diversified partner base. Russia accounted for 10.2% of exports, Australia for 4.1%, and Uzbekistan for 3.6%, together making up only 18.0% of total flows. The remaining 82.0% was distributed among numerous smaller markets.

In 2020, MENA's tea exports in value terms reached 429 M $ US, showing a moderate 8.7% year-on-year increase. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports grew by 37.7%, with a compound annual growth rate of 11.3%. The largest decline occurred in 2019 at 6.8%, while the largest increase was in 2018 at 36.0%.

After two years of growth, MENA's tea import volume declined in 2020. Imports reached 505.0 K t, reflecting a gradual 7.6% decrease from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports increased by 5.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of 1.8%. The highest import volume was in 2019 at 546.8 K t, while the largest increase occurred in 2018 at 8.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, Kenya, China, and Sri Lanka were the largest suppliers of tea to MENA in kind, accounting for 29.7%, 19.6%, and 19.3% of imports, respectively. Together, they formed 68.6% of total imports in kind.
