The tea market in Bangladesh expanded from 343.5 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 426.4 thousand tonnes in 2022, driven by steady production growth. However, in 2023 the market volume contracted to 404.6 thousand tonnes.

In 2022, tea gardens faced a workers’ strike demanding higher wages and inadequate rainfall, yet annual production increased. The following year, the Bangladesh Tea Board reported record production and launched an export-oriented quality improvement push, even as overall market size dipped.

For 2024, industry sources cited adverse monsoon rains that reduced leaf quality and output, prompting Bangladesh Bank to allocate BDT 12 billion in sectoral financing. State-owned entities like the Bangladesh Tea Board and Bangladesh Tea Research Institute continued to set minimum auction prices and provide research support.

Bangladesh's tea production grew for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 412.0 K t of tea, a modest increase of 4.6% compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production rose by 15.7%, with an average annual growth rate of 5.0%. The lowest production level was in 2018 at 340.0 K t, which saw the largest decline of 4.5%. In contrast, 2019 recorded the biggest increase at 15.9%.

Exports tea from Bangladesh

The market experienced significant fluctuations during this period. Exports dropped to their lowest point in 2018 at 633 t, marking the largest decline of 75.6%. By 2020, tea exports from Bangladesh rebounded sharply to 2 223 t, a 153.1% increase over the previous year. From the peak in 2017 to the trough in 2018, exports changed by a factor of 4.1.

Bangladesh's tea export value increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports totaled 4 430 K $ US, up 31.0% year-over-year. However, over the 2017-2020 period, export value decreased by 11.3%, with an average annual decline of 3.9%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 2 760 K $ US, which saw the largest drop of 44.8%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Pakistan (44.5% of export value), the United Arab Emirates (25.9%), and the United States (16.2%) formed the core of Bangladesh's tea exports by value, together representing 86.6% of total flows.

Bangladesh's tea import volume declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, imports stood at 355 t, a sharp decrease of 89.3% compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports fell by 92.3%, with an average annual decline of 57.5%.
