Eastern Asia's taro production value has increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the output was valued at 2,275 million US dollars, showing a moderate 7.0% rise compared to 2019. Exports taro from Eastern Asia

Following two years of growth, Eastern Asia's taro export volume declined in 2020. The region exported 70,421 tons of taro, representing a 5.5% decrease from the previous year. The peak was in 2019 with 74,544 tons, while the largest increase occurred in 2018 at 3.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, taro exports from Eastern Asia were not heavily concentrated on a few key destinations. Vietnam accounted for 18.2% of exports in kind, the United Arab Emirates for 11.1%, and Saudi Arabia for 5.0%. Together, these three countries made up only 34.3% of total export flows.

After rising for two years, taro export value from Eastern Asia fell in 2020. Exports totaled 78,197 thousand US dollars, remaining nearly unchanged from 2019. During 2017-2020, Vietnam, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States were significant buyers of taro from Eastern Asia in value terms, with shares of 12.2%, 4.8%, and 3.1%, respectively. However, their combined share reached only 20.1% of total export value, leaving the remaining 79.9% distributed among numerous other trading partners.

Taro imports into Eastern Asia decreased for the second year in a row in 2020. Imports totaled 30,900 tons, a 25.0% drop from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports fell by 25%, with an average annual decline of 9.1%. The highest volume was in 2018 at 43,633 tons, which also experienced the largest increase of 5.9%.
