Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2023, the Caribbean sweet potato market contracted sharply, with volume falling from 763 thousand tonnes to 456 thousand tonnes. This 40% reduction was almost entirely attributable to a collapse in domestic production, which decreased from 776 thousand tonnes to 466 thousand tonnes over the six-year period.

While international trade influenced annual fluctuations, it did not alter the overall downward trend. A temporary surge in domestic availability occurred in 2022 when exports plummeted to 1.3 thousand tonnes, but exports returned to higher levels in 2023. Imports remained negligible, never exceeding 2.7 thousand tonnes in any year.
