Earlier Report Observations

The sweet potato market in Cabo Verde contracted significantly from 5 468 tons in 2018 to 2 252 tons in 2023. This decline was primarily driven by a prolonged drought that severely affected agricultural yields, leading to scarce harvests and higher prices. Concurrently, a shift in consumer preferences towards more industrialized foods rich in sugars and fats reduced demand for traditional staples like sweet potatoes.

Despite genetic improvements developed by scientist Maria Isabel Andrade, which enhanced dry matter content and planned promotion in Cabo Verde, and the introduction of organic farming on Santo Antão Island in 2021, these positive initiatives were insufficient to offset the drought's impact. Production briefly recovered to 3 710 tons in 2021 due to organic investments, but fell again as drought conditions persisted, influencing consumer access and market volume.
