After the EU abolished sugar production quotas and minimum prices in 2017, the German sugar beet market adjusted to world market prices. This shift, combined with increased use of beet by-products for bioethanol production, supported a rise in output to 29.7 million tons in 2019.

Extreme weather conditions in 2020 reduced the harvest, but emergency authorizations for neonicotinoid seed treatments in 2021 helped control aphid-transmitted viral diseases, leading to a recovery to 31.9 million tons.

Production fell to 28.2 million tons in 2022 due to competitive distortions with other EU countries that permit plant protection products banned in Germany. EU market stabilization measures, including mandatory industry agreements, facilitated a rebound to 31.6 million tons in 2023, aided by the adoption of high-yielding, disease-resistant beet varieties.

In 2020, Germany produced 28 618 thousand tonnes of sugar beet, marking a 3.7% decline compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production fell by 16%, with a compound annual growth rate of -5.6%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 26 191 thousand tonnes. The sharpest year-on-year decrease occurred in 2018 at 23.1%, while the largest increase was observed in 2019 with a 13.5% rise.

Germany's sugar beet export volume increased for the third consecutive year in 2020, reaching 349.8 thousand tonnes, which represents a 22.5% rise compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, exports grew by 132.8%, translating to an annualized growth rate of 32.5%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Switzerland and the Netherlands were the primary markets for Germany's sugar beet exports in volume terms. Switzerland accounted for 74.3% of total export flows, while the Netherlands represented 25.4%, together comprising 99.7% of all exports.
