Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2021, sucrose production in Micronesia increased steadily, driven by the expansion of cultivated areas which boosted harvests. Production rose from 4 869 tons in 2018 to 11 429 tons in 2021, while market volume grew from 7 195 tons to 13 403 tons over the same period. Import levels fluctuated, peaking in 2019 before declining in 2021 as local output covered more of domestic demand.

In 2022, production dropped sharply to 4 046 tons, influenced by global supply disruptions including floods in Brazil that affected sugarcane plantations worldwide. Prices for sugar surged during this period, putting pressure on production costs. A partial recovery to 4 962 tons occurred in 2023 as the market adapted to continued price volatility and the after-effects of the European sugar quota removal.
