The starch market in Zimbabwe contracted to 8 041 tons in 2019 from 9 321 tons the previous year, primarily due to a sharp decline in imports. Production remained nearly stable. A recovery followed in 2020, with market volume expanding to 9 859 tons as both domestic output and imports increased.

From 2020 to 2023, the market entered a period of sustained expansion, growing to 12 423 tons. This growth was driven by consistent increases in domestic production, which rose from 6 886 tons to 8 340 tons, and imports, which climbed from 2 973 tons to 4 083 tons over the same period.

In 2024, starch imports continued their upward trend, reaching 4 544 tons. The market environment was shaped by several key developments, including the April 2024 introduction of the new structured ZiG currency to stabilize the monetary system and a new grain sourcing regulation mandating that millers and food processors source at least 40% of their raw materials locally.

Zimbabwe's starch production rebounded after two years of decline. In 2020, the country produced 6 886 tonnes of starches, marking a significant 14.8% increase from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 7.1%, with an average annual growth rate of 2.3%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 5 999 tonnes, while the largest annual decline occurred in 2018 at 6.1%.

Over the 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 15.3%, with an average annual decline of 5.4%. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 2 042 tonnes, which also saw the largest annual decline of 37.8%.

Zimbabwe's starch import value rebounded after two years of decrease. In 2020, the country imported starches worth 1 725 thousand US dollars, representing a 37.8% increase from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, import value decreased by 15.7%, with an average annual decline of 5.6%. The lowest import value was recorded in 2019 at 1 251 thousand US dollars, which also experienced the largest annual decline of 37.6%.
