From 2017 to 2020, Slovakia, Greece, and Romania were the top destinations for Bulgaria's starch exports by volume. Slovakia accounted for 31.3% of exports, Greece for 25.5%, and Romania for 11.6%. Together, these three countries made up 68.5% of total export flows.

In 2020, Bulgaria imported 8 435 tonnes of starch, a 13.0% increase from the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports grew by 5.4%, with an average annual growth rate of 1.8%. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 7 464 tonnes, while the highest was in 2018 at 8 471 tonnes. The largest decline occurred in 2019, with an 11.9% drop.

Starch imports into Bulgaria declined in value for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports were recorded at 4 642 thousand US dollars, a modest decrease of 6.1% from the previous year. The highest import value was in 2018 at 5 135 thousand US dollars, with the largest increase that year at 12.5%.
