Earlier Report Observations

The stainless steel wire market in Russia opened the period at 17.3 thousand tons in 2018, supported by state-backed investment projects and import substitution initiatives aimed at developing domestic production. However, the market volume gradually declined to 12.9 thousand tons by 2021. The sharpest drop occurred in 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted supply chains and logistics, reducing both imports and local output.

Market conditions shifted in 2022 following the introduction of new sanctions, which prompted a search for alternative import sources and stimulated domestic production. Imports of stainless steel wire from non-sanctioned countries expanded, and major Russian companies activated new production lines. As a result, the market grew to 15.6 thousand tons in 2022 and surged to 20.9 thousand tons in 2023, driven by a 30–54% increase in import volumes and modernization of local facilities.

The growth reversed in 2024 as the market fell to 14.1 thousand tons. This contraction was linked to a 29% drop in wire production in early 2024 and lower sales of wire-based construction products such as grids and fences. By 2025, domestic production had decreased further to about 3.0 thousand tons, indicating ongoing adjustments in the industry.
