Earlier Report Observations

The Italian stainless steel wire market volume fluctuated considerably from 2018 to 2024. It peaked at 104 000 t in 2018 before declining to 81 000 t in 2019. The sharpest contraction occurred in 2020, when market size dropped to 42 000 t as the COVID-19 pandemic severely reduced demand in key steel-consuming sectors like automotive, machinery, and construction.

A post-pandemic rebound lifted the market to 59 000 t in 2021. However, the following two years brought renewed challenges. In 2022, high energy and raw material prices, coupled with a reported 30% drop in domestic stainless steel demand, pushed market volume down to 55 000 t. The MIMS Decree of April 2022, which highlighted price increases exceeding 8% for construction materials including steel products, added pressure on public contracts and industrial activity. In 2023, market size fell further to 39 000 t, influenced by the end of China's expansion cycle, the development of substitute materials, and the ongoing decline of stainless steel demand across Europe.

Despite the persistent energy crisis and supply chain difficulties, the market recovered slightly to 43 000 t in 2024. Price stability in the first half, partly due to external factors such as producer strikes, and a resilient distribution network of 28 service centers supported the Italian stainless steel wire sector amid a volatile environment.
