In 2020, MENA produced 152.1 thousand tons of spinach, marking a slight increase of 2.4% compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 8.7%, with an average annual growth rate of 2.8%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 154.8 thousand tons, which represented a significant increase of 10.6% that year. However, in 2019, production saw its largest decline of 4.1%.

MENA's spinach production value rose for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the output was valued at 367.3 million US dollars, up by 5.7% from the previous year. The lowest value occurred in 2018 at 342.7 million US dollars, which saw the largest decline of 7.1%.

Exports spinach from MENA

MENA's spinach export volume declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, exports totaled 119 tons, showing a sharp reduction of 66.2% year-over-year. From 2017 to 2020, exports decreased by 83.7%, with an average annual decline of 45.4%.

Between 2017 and 2020, the main destinations for MENA's spinach exports in volume terms were Afghanistan (15.3% of exports), the United States (4.2%), and Belarus (2.7%). Together, these three countries accounted for 22.2% of total export flows.

An analysis of spinach exports in value terms from 2017 to 2020 reveals a broad distribution across many markets. Afghanistan (13.7% of exports), the United States (7.0%), and Belarus (1.6%) together accounted for 22.2% of total flows, while the remaining 77.8% went to other trading partners.

Imports spinach to MENA

MENA imported 1 367 tons of spinach in 2020, reflecting an uptick of 3.8% from the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports increased by 13.1%, with an average annual growth rate of 4.2%. The highest import volume was recorded in 2018 at 1 367 tons, which saw the largest increase of 21.0% that year. In contrast, 2019 experienced the largest decline of 9.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, Italy (44.0% of imports), the Netherlands (12.2%), and China (7.2%) were the principal suppliers of spinach to MENA in volume terms, jointly accounting for 63.4% of total imports.
