Yemen's sorghum market experienced significant fluctuations in volume between 2018 and 2023. The market grew sharply from 155.7 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 230.8 thousand tonnes in 2019. This surge was supported by the introduction of an annual award for high-yielding farmers and researchers in 2018, which aimed to stimulate competitive production. After a drop to 167.2 thousand tonnes in 2020, the market recovered to 198.1 thousand tonnes in 2021.

The recovery in 2021 was driven by the expansion of sorghum cultivation areas across most Yemeni provinces, solidifying its role as the primary grain crop. Despite noted climate variability affecting rain-fed production, the crop's dual use for food and animal feed supported demand. Further growth to 240.6 thousand tonnes in 2022 was reinforced by the spread of contract farming and targeted marketing initiatives, which secured crop offtake and improved farmer incomes, encouraging continued cultivation.

By 2023, the sorghum market volume receded to 200.5 thousand tonnes, still maintaining a level above that of 2018. Throughout the period, sorghum retained its dominant position in the country's grain sector, accounting for over 60% of total grain cultivation area.
