Earlier Report Observations

The Polish smoked salmon market entered the period with a strong foundation in processing and export, particularly to Germany, where Polish firms became dominant suppliers. Growing international demand from developing markets like China and Brazil pushed prices upward in 2019. The global COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 further strengthened worldwide demand for salmon, supporting increased Polish production and domestic market volume.

Regulatory and corporate developments shaped the market in the early 2020s. In 2021, the expansion of Morpol, a major processor, following its acquisition by a global leader, broadened its distribution reach. Simultaneously, new EU regulations limiting the stiffening process of salmon to a maximum of 96 hours forced a reorganization of supply chains and increased logistical costs for the industry. By 2022, the sector continued to navigate these regulatory pressures while also seeing new investment, such as Limito's plans to build a new fish processing plant in Grudziądz aimed at expanding production capacity for smoked salmon.

Production continued its upward trajectory, reaching 77 093 t by 2023, while the domestic market volume grew significantly to 25 599 t. Exports remained substantial at 56 956 t in 2024, indicating sustained external demand for Polish smoked salmon products.
