The market volume increased by 21% to 15 947 tons in 2020, then declined by 10% to 14 286 tons in 2021. In contrast, the market value rose from 3.5 million US dollars in 2019 to 5.0 million in 2020 and reached 5.6 million in 2021, reflecting higher unit prices.

Underlying these changes was a fundamental shift in trade patterns. Imports of slate grew consistently from 590 tons in 2018 to 3 583 tons in 2024, while exports collapsed from 5 540 tons to just 69 tons over the same period. This transition turned Sweden from a net exporter into a market increasingly reliant on foreign supply.
