Earlier Report Observations

The Greek slaked lime market experienced significant fluctuations between 2018 and 2024. After starting at 132.3 thousand tonnes in 2018, market volume declined to 125.9 thousand tonnes in 2019 and further to 121.3 thousand tonnes in 2020. This was followed by a sharp increase to 162.8 thousand tonnes in 2021, which marked the highest point in the period. Subsequently, the market contracted to 140.3 thousand tonnes in 2022, 138.8 thousand tonnes in 2023, and 117.6 thousand tonnes by 2024.

The surge in 2021 was driven by a substantial rise in domestic production, which jumped to 170.3 thousand tonnes from 135.6 thousand tonnes the previous year. At the same time, imports remained at 4.9 thousand tonnes, similar to 2020, while exports decreased to 12.4 thousand tonnes from 19.2 thousand tonnes, contributing to the larger domestic availability. After 2021, production levels moderated to 154.4 thousand tonnes in 2022 and 156.0 thousand tonnes in 2023 before dropping to 132.4 thousand tonnes in 2024. Import volumes fell sharply to 0.7 thousand tonnes in 2022 and became negligible thereafter, while exports recovered to 14.8 thousand tonnes in 2022 and 17.3 thousand tonnes in 2023 before settling at 15.0 thousand tonnes in 2024.

Overall, the market showed a volatile pattern, with the 2021 peak standing out as an anomaly in an otherwise downward trend from 2018 to 2024. The total market volume in 2024 was 11% lower than at the start of the period, reflecting a contraction in both production and net trade.
