The market for skim milk in Denmark underwent a significant contraction from 2018 to 2024, with production falling from 313.5 thousand tons to 197.3 thousand tons. The domestic market size followed a similar downward path, declining from 305.8 thousand tons to 175.0 thousand tons over the same period, indicating a sharp reduction in local consumption.

This declining trend was reinforced in 2022 by high global milk prices resulting from a worldwide supply shortage and increased production costs for feed, energy, and gas, which further pressured domestic demand. Although overall national milk collection remained stable, production and consumption of skim milk continued to drop.

Concurrently, exports of skim milk began a notable rise after 2021, growing from 4.6 thousand tons to 25.4 thousand tons by 2024, reflecting a growing orientation toward external markets as the domestic market shrank.
