Earlier Report Observations

The market volume for sesame oil in Italy fluctuated between 3.3 thousand tons and 4.1 thousand tons from 2018 to 2023. After a stable period around 3.3 thousand tons in 2018-2019, consumption grew to 3.5 thousand tons in 2020 and surged by over 18% to 4.1 thousand tons in 2021. However, it dropped sharply by nearly 31% to 2.9 thousand tons in 2022 before recovering to 3.4 thousand tons in 2023.

In February 2020, roasted sesame oil was recalled due to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons exceeding legal limits, and throughout 2020-2021, extensive recalls of sesame seed products contaminated with ethylene oxide impacted supply chains and consumer confidence. Despite these challenges, market volume expanded. By 2024, consumer preferences shifted towards organic and cold-pressed sesame oil, with leader Kadoya introducing premium organic oils in February 2024, and updated European regulations on vegetable oil labeling emphasizing transparency.
