In February 2020, roasted sesame oil was recalled due to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons exceeding legal limits, and throughout 2020-2021, extensive recalls of sesame seed products contaminated with ethylene oxide impacted supply chains and consumer confidence. Despite these challenges, market volume expanded. By 2024, consumer preferences shifted towards organic and cold-pressed sesame oil, with leader Kadoya introducing premium organic oils in February 2024, and updated European regulations on vegetable oil labeling emphasizing transparency.
