Saturated acyclic hydrocarbons market in Hungary

Between 2018 and 2023, the Hungarian saturated acyclic hydrocarbons market contracted sharply, with volume falling from 171.7 thousand tons to 53.7 thousand tons and value dropping from $99.6 million to $36.8 million. This downward trend was interrupted in 2024 when both volume and value rebounded to 76.9 thousand tons and $50.5 million, respectively.

The market's size is primarily determined by import flows, which accounted for the bulk of supply. Imports in kind fell from 183.8 thousand tons in 2018 to a low of 66.6 thousand tons in 2023 before increasing to 92.9 thousand tons in 2024. Domestic production declined steadily throughout the period, from 10.9 thousand tons to 3.8 thousand tons, playing a diminishing role in total supply.

In 2021, a notable divergence occurred: the market volume continued to decrease, but its value rose from $47.1 million to $59.4 million, suggesting shifts in import prices or product mix.

In 2021, output was valued at 6 431 thousand US dollars, marking a significant drop of 13.9% compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2018 to 2021, production fell by 26.8%, with an average annual decline of 9.9%.

Hungary's production of saturated acyclic hydrocarbons has decreased for the second consecutive year. In 2021, the country produced 8 570 tonnes, which represents a 17.0% decline from the year before. From 2018 to 2021, production dropped by 21.4%, with an average annual decrease of 7.7%. The highest production level was recorded in 2019 at 11 102 tonnes, which also saw the largest increase of 1.8% that year.

After two years of growth, Hungary's exports of saturated acyclic hydrocarbons declined. In 2021, exports amounted to 23.0 thousand tonnes, down by 18.7% from 2020. The peak export volume was recorded in 2020 at 28.4 thousand tonnes, which also experienced the largest increase of 15.1% that year.

From 2018 to 2021, Italy, Germany, and Romania were the key partners for Hungary's exports of saturated acyclic hydrocarbons in volume terms. Italy accounted for 52.2% of exports, Germany for 16.9%, and Romania for 10.2%, together making up 79.4% of total export flows.

Following a two-year decline, Hungary's exports of saturated acyclic hydrocarbons increased in value. In 2021, exports reached 19.6 million US dollars, up by 25.6% year-on-year. Between 2018 and 2021, exports grew by 4.6%, with an average annual increase of 1.5%. The lowest value was recorded in 2020 at 15.6 million US dollars, which followed the largest decline of 15.7% in 2019.

Over the period from 2018 to 2021, imports dropped by 43.7%, with an average annual decline of 17.4%.

The lowest value was recorded in 2020 at 55.2 million US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 30.0% that year.
