Earlier Report Observations

In 2018, production of salted, brined, dried or smoked pork in Zimbabwe stood at 759 tons. The industry faced challenges as meat processing capacity utilization fell to 30% due to high production costs and difficulties in sourcing raw materials, while a 40% tariff on imported mechanically deboned meat raised input costs for local processors. Despite these constraints, production surged by 35% to 1 024 tons in 2019. The following year, output experienced a minor correction, dipping by 4.5% to 978 tons in 2020.

A recovery began in 2021, with production rising 15% to 1 125 tons. This growth aligned with reported increases in consumption of unhealthy processed foods, including processed meats, driven by economic instability, poverty, and inequality in the country. The market expanded sharply in 2022, jumping 39% to 1 561 tons. By 2023, production stabilized at 1 575 tons, marking a marginal increase of less than 1% over the previous year.
