The market volume for coniferous roundwood in Croatia declined consistently from 2018 to 2022, falling from 1 046 thousand m³ to 737 thousand m³. This represented a total contraction of approximately 30% over the five-year period, with annual decreases ranging between 7% and 9%.

The trend reversed in 2023, when the market volume grew by 7.5% to reach 792 thousand m³. This recovery coincided with a notable increase in imports, which remained elevated in both 2022 and 2023 compared to earlier years, while exports fell significantly from 2022 levels.

Croatia's roundwood coniferous production declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 876 K m³, which represents a 9.2% decrease compared to the previous year. Production peaked in 2018 at 1 059 K m³, with the largest annual increase of 19.4% also occurring that year.

Following two years of growth, Croatia's roundwood coniferous production value declined. In 2020, output was valued at 55 531 K $ US, showing a sharp 26.1% drop from the previous year. Exports coniferous roundwood from Croatia

Exports in kind, K m³

In 2020, Croatia exported 73.5 K m³ of roundwood coniferous, marking an abrupt 36.2% decline compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, exports decreased by 28.3%, with a compound annual growth rate of -10.5%. The peak export volume was recorded in 2019 at 115.2 K m³, which also saw the largest annual increase of 44.0%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Slovenia, Austria, and Italy were the main markets for Croatia's roundwood coniferous exports in volume terms. Slovenia accounted for 54.9% of exports, Austria for 19.4%, and Italy for 16.4%. Together, these three countries represented 90.7% of total export flows.

Croatia's roundwood coniferous export value stood at 4 659 K $ US in 2020, corresponding to a 48.0% decrease compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, export value declined by 24.2%, equating to an annualized decrease of 8.8%. The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 8 966 K $ US, with the largest annual increase of 63.8% also occurring that year.

Throughout 2017-2020, Slovenia, Italy, and Austria formed the core group of markets for Croatia's roundwood coniferous exports in value terms. Slovenia accounted for 46.1% of export value, Italy for 22.2%, and Austria for 19.7%. Collectively, these three markets represented 88.1% of total export flows.

Croatia's roundwood coniferous imports showed noticeable fluctuations during the period. In 2020, imports amounted to 70.1 K m³, down by 32.7% compared to the previous year. The highest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 104.2 K m³, while the lowest occurred in 2017, creating a peak-to-trough difference of 7.2 times. The largest annual increase of 362.4% was recorded in 2018.
