Earlier Report Observations

The Swedish rivets market from 2018 to 2021 was influenced by the structure of the domestic steel industry, dominated by several large integrated and scrap-based mills. This foundation supported production, and by 2021, groundbreaking advancements in fossil-free steel manufacturing became a key driver. SSAB successfully produced the world's first fossil-free steel at its pilot plant in Luleå, while H2 Green Steel announced plans for a new production facility in Boden. These developments, marking the entry of new players and significant technological investment, coincided with a rise in rivet production to 3 444 t and an expansion of the market volume to 5 307 t in that year.

The market dynamics shifted notably after 2021. A continued industry focus on sustainability and low-emission steel in 2022 was followed by a major regulatory change in September 2023, when the EU implemented a ban on the import and purchase of certain iron and steel products containing Russian materials. This sanction required strict origin documentation, drastically reducing imports of rivets and contributing to a market volume contraction to 4 159 t in 2023. By 2024, domestic rivet production grew further to 4 286 t, but imports collapsed to just 360 t. The overall market volume in kind declined to 3 929 t, while its value increased to 8.7 million USD, reflecting the industry's ongoing transition toward more sustainable and potentially higher-cost production methods influenced by global raw material oversupply and strong demand for fossil-free products.
