Earlier Report Observations

The German market for rendered lard and pig fat experienced pronounced volume swings from 2018 to 2024. The domestic market volume fell sharply in 2019, recovered through 2021, then contracted again in 2022 and 2023 before a partial rebound in 2024. These movements were primarily driven by fluctuating export volumes and production levels.

A 42.9% surge in export value in 2019 coincided with a reduced domestic market volume as more product was shipped overseas. Similarly, a steep 51.7% jump in export value in 2023 occurred alongside a rise in physical export volume to 86,100 tonnes, drawing substantial supply away from the local market. The pig fat price also reached a five-year high of $1.14 per kg in 2022, reflecting tight supply conditions during that period.

By 2024, market volume partially recovered to 66,300 tonnes as export volume eased to 79,200 tonnes and production increased to 138,100 tonnes. Throughout the period, no major new market entrants, significant facility launches, or legislative changes were reported, leaving export performance and production shifts as the central market dynamics.
