Refined coconut oil and fractions market in the Netherlands

The domestic market volume for refined coconut oil in the Netherlands more than doubled from 60.1 thousand tons in 2018 to 127.3 thousand tons in 2020, with value rising from 89.7 million US dollars to 185.0 million US dollars. This surge was primarily driven by the growing popularity of coconut oil promoted as a superfood with perceived health benefits, which stimulated consumption and its incorporation into various food products like ice cream, baby food, and confectionery. The distinction between refined oil for high-temperature cooking and unrefined oil for nutritional purposes further supported market segmentation and usage.

From 2021 onward, imports increased steadily, reaching 21.3 thousand tons in 2024, while exports fluctuated and dropped notably in 2023. This shift coincided with global production issues in key coconut-growing regions due to climate change, leading to supply shortages and price increases. Concurrently, rising consumer demand for organic and non-GMO certified coconut oil boosted import volumes, even as some consumers switched to alternative oils like refined sunflower oil due to higher coconut oil prices.

After a two-year decline, the Netherlands saw an increase in the production value of refined coconut oil and fractions. In 2020, output reached 405.1 million US dollars, marking an 18.4% rise compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production decreased by 14.1%, with a compound annual growth rate of 5.0%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 342.3 million US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 16.0%.

The Netherlands experienced a second consecutive year of growth in the production volume of refined coconut oil and fractions. In 2020, 318.3 thousand tonnes were produced, representing a 15.7% increase over the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, production rose by 18.9%, translating to an annualized rate of 5.9%. The lowest volume was recorded in 2018 at 254.0 thousand tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 5.1%.

Following a two-year contraction, refined coconut oil and fractions exports from the Netherlands increased. In 2020, the country exported 203.3 thousand tonnes, which is 8.2% higher than in 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 6.7%, with an annualized rate of 2.3%. The lowest volume was recorded in 2019 at 187.9 thousand tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 8.6%.

From 2017 to 2020, Germany, Belgium, and Italy were the top contributors to exports in kind, accounting for 30.9%, 17.3%, and 11.3% of the total, respectively. Together, they made up 59.5% of all export flows.

After a two-year drop, the Netherlands's export value of refined coconut oil and fractions increased. In 2020, exports amounted to 241.4 million US dollars, showing a moderate rise of 9.8% compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 43.7%, with an annualized rate of 17.4%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 219.9 million US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 35.3%.

Between 2017 and 2020, imports fell by 9.4%, with an annualized rate of 3.2%. The lowest volume was recorded in 2018 at 11.8 thousand tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 13.3%. The largest increase occurred in 2019, with a rise of 5.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, the Philippines, Sweden, and Indonesia were the primary suppliers of refined coconut oil and fractions to the Netherlands, accounting for 37.1%, 27.9%, and 9.0% of imports in kind, respectively. Together, they formed 74.0% of total imports.
