ECOWAS has seen its production of raw sheep and lamb skins grow for the third year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 59 937 tonnes, marking a modest increase of 8.0% compared to the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production rose by 12%, with an average annual growth rate of 3.8%.

Exports raw sheep and lamb skins from ECOWAS

ECOWAS's exports of raw sheep and lamb skins have fallen for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports totaled 1 230 tonnes, representing a decline of 25.8% from the year before. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports dropped by 39.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of -15.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, the main destinations for ECOWAS's exports of raw sheep and lamb skins were China, accounting for 32.9% of exports, Pakistan with 16.0%, and Italy at 12.7%. Together, these three countries made up 61.6% of total export flows.

After two years of decline, ECOWAS's exports of raw sheep and lamb skins in value terms have rebounded. In 2020, exports reached 1 276 thousand US dollars, showing a significant rise of 14.3% compared to the prior year. However, between 2017 and 2020, overall exports decreased by 55.4%, which translates to an annualized rate of -23.6%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 1 117 thousand US dollars, with the largest single-year drop of 56.2% also occurring that year.

During the 2017-2020 period, China was the top destination for ECOWAS's exports in value terms, representing 41.7% of the total. Italy followed with 26.2%, and Pakistan accounted for 12.2%. Combined, these three countries comprised 80.1% of all export flows.

The market for imports of raw sheep and lamb skins into ECOWAS showed notable fluctuations over the period. Imports hit their lowest point in 2019 at 325 tonnes, then surged to a peak of 1 152 tonnes in 2020, resulting in a 3.5-fold increase between these years. Import values for raw sheep and lamb skins into ECOWAS displayed irregular changes, reflecting a volatile market. The lowest point was in 2019 at 259 thousand US dollars, followed by a peak in 2020 of 1 006 thousand US dollars, representing a 3.9-fold increase. In 2020, imports rose sharply by 287.8% compared to the previous year. The largest decline was recorded in 2018, with a decrease of 29.3%.

Over the 2017-2020 period, Canada led as the primary source of imports in value terms for ECOWAS, making up 24.6% of the total. Spain followed with 14.7%, and Mauritania accounted for 11.0%. Collectively, these three countries represented 50.3% of all import flows.
