Earlier Report Observations

The market volume for raw bovine and equine hides and skins in South Korea experienced significant fluctuations between 2018 and 2023. After reaching 171 thousand tonnes in 2019, consumption dropped sharply to 128 thousand tonnes in 2020. A partial recovery followed in 2021 and 2022, but the market declined again to 118 thousand tonnes in 2023, marking a 31% contraction from the 2019 peak.

Domestic production grew consistently from 33 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 41 thousand tonnes in 2023. In contrast, imports fell from 137 thousand tonnes in 2019 to 78 thousand tonnes in 2023. The reduction in import volumes was the primary contributor to the overall market contraction, as local output increased but could not fully offset the decline in foreign supply.
