Earlier Report Observations

The Armenian raw bovine and equine hides and skins market between 2018 and 2023 was shaped by a persistent decline in cattle population, driven by pasture shortages and restrictions on live cattle imports from Russia and Kazakhstan. This led to a raw material deficit for hide production, which pressured output volumes. Domestic market size, however, expanded from 6 943 t in 2018 to 8 681 t in 2022, largely because export shipments plummeted from 2 467 t to zero over the same period, redirecting available supply to local consumption.

In 2023, the market size contracted to 8 237 t, while production fell to 8 219 t, reflecting the ongoing structural constraints. Farmers' widespread practice of delaying slaughter in anticipation of better prices further limited raw material availability, exacerbating the supply shortfall. Seasonal shifts in meat demand, notably a spring rise in pork consumption, also influenced hide market dynamics without altering the underlying trend.
