Production of rapeseed oilcake in Western Asia grew strongly from 481 thousand tons in 2018 to 732 thousand tons in 2020. This sharp increase was fueled by the development of new rapeseed oil extraction and processing capacity in Dubai, which expanded to supply the Chinese market during a period of trade tensions, simultaneously raising the output of oilcake as a by-product.

Following the 2020 peak, production eased to 679 thousand tons in 2021 and 627 thousand tons in 2022 before climbing back to 684 thousand tons in 2023. The domestic market volume mirrored this volatility, falling to 388 thousand tons in 2021 but then recovering robustly to reach 566 thousand tons by 2023.

In monetary terms, the market's value rose consistently from $144 million in 2018 to $218 million in 2023, supported by the overall expansion in volume and shifting price levels for the commodity.

In 2020, the region produced 732.3 thousand tons of rapeseed oilcake, marking a significant 31.4% increase compared to 2019. Looking at the broader period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 26.4%, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 8.1%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 481.1 thousand tons, with that year also seeing the largest decline of 17.0%.

Western Asia's rapeseed oilcake production has risen for the second year in a row. In 2020, the output was valued at 219.4 million US dollars, representing a sharp 29.6% increase from 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production increased by 8.1%, equating to an annualized growth rate of 2.6%. The minimum value was recorded in 2018 at 161.6 million US dollars, which also experienced the largest decline of 20.3%.

Exported rapeseed oilcake volumes from Western Asia have increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 553.5 thousand tons, reflecting a 43.5% rise compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports grew by 55.5%, which corresponds to an annualized rate of 15.8%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 238.7 thousand tons, with that year seeing the largest decline of 33.0%. In contrast, the largest increase occurred in 2019, with a 61.6% jump.

From 2017 to 2020, the main buyers of rapeseed oilcake from Western Asia were Vietnam, accounting for 34.7% of exports in kind, China with 30.4%, and Thailand at 25.4%. Together, these three countries comprised 90.4% of total exports in kind.

The minimum value was recorded in 2018 at 80.2 million US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 35.7%. The largest increase was in 2019, with a 46.1% rise.
