A sharp recovery began in 2021 as the market volume grew 21% to 197.9 thousand tonnes, fueled by a global consumer shift toward natural and functional foods—a trend accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. After a slight dip to 194.0 thousand tonnes in 2022, demand surged by 31% to 254.1 thousand tonnes in 2023, primarily driven by Brazil's increased use of vegetable oils for biofuels due to national blending mandates, which significantly raised domestic consumption of rapeseed.
