Earlier Report Observations

The market for rapeseed, colza, and mustard oil in Southern Asia showed significant shifts between 2018 and 2020. The market volume declined from 2 945 тыс. т in 2018 to 2 538 тыс. т in 2019, before rebounding sharply to 4 079 тыс. т in 2020.

A period of sustained growth followed from 2020 to 2023, with the market volume reaching 5 152 тыс. т in 2023. This expansion was underpinned by India's position as the world's largest mustard oil producer, where record rapeseed-mustard output of 13.2 million tons was reported for the 2023-24 season.

In 2024, key policy measures were enacted to support the sector. The Indian government approved the National Mission on Edible Oils – Oilseeds with a focus on increasing rapeseed-mustard production and raised import duties on crude edible oils to protect domestic farmers and prices.
