The market volume in physical terms followed a similar pattern, rising slightly to 130.8 thousand tons in 2021 before declining to 117.3 thousand tons in 2022. In value terms, the market surged to $232.0 million in 2021, reflecting higher prices, then decreased to $214.6 million in 2022.

The year 2024 introduced several developments, including the opening of a new polypropylene production facility by DS Smith in Värnamo, which expanded local manufacturing capacity. Concurrently, new Swedish legislation clarifying waste sorting rules for construction debris and a ban on single-use plastic cups, alongside updated EU packaging regulations, reinforced the focus on recycling and sustainability within the polypropylene market.

Sweden's exports of PP in primary forms increased for the second consecutive year in 2020, reaching 23.8 thousand tons. This represents a significant 21.7% growth compared to 2019. Looking at the broader period from 2017 to 2020, exports rose by 4.2%, which translates to an average annual increase of 1.4%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 15.7 thousand tons, marking the largest decline of 31.3% that year. In contrast, 2019 saw the largest increase of 24.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, Germany, Denmark, and Poland were the top destinations for Sweden's exports of PP in primary forms by volume. Germany accounted for 27.6% of exports, Denmark for 22.5%, and Poland for 9.2%. Together, these three countries made up 59.3% of Sweden's total export flows in this category.

Over the period from 2017 to 2020, however, exports decreased by 12.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of -4.3%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 29.5 million US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 16.6%. The largest increase occurred in 2019 at 4.0%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Germany, Denmark, and Poland remained the leading buyers of PP in primary forms from Sweden in value terms.
