Earlier Report Observations

The West African fresh potato market expanded from 2.2 million tonnes in 2018 to 2.8 million tonnes in 2023, supported by a rise in regional production. Output in the ECOWAS region grew from 2.0 million tonnes to 2.7 million tonnes over this period. This trend aligned with a broader increase in West African potato production, which reached 4.7 million tonnes in 2020.

Market growth continued through 2021 and 2022, with consumption reaching 2.7 million tonnes by 2022. In 2023, despite factors such as price reductions in European potato markets and the commissioning of new processing plants, West African production and market volume maintained their upward trajectory, reaching 2.8 million tonnes.
