Output in the ECOWAS region grew from 2.0 million tonnes to 2.7 million tonnes over this period. This trend aligned with a broader increase in West African potato production, which reached 4.7 million tonnes in 2020.

Market growth continued through 2021 and 2022, with consumption reaching 2.7 million tonnes by 2022. In 2023, despite factors such as price reductions in European potato markets and the commissioning of new processing plants, West African production and market volume maintained their upward trajectory, reaching 2.8 million tonnes.

Potato production in ECOWAS has increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, ECOWAS produced 2 158 thousand tonnes of potatoes, marking a 3.1% rise compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 14.3%, with a compound annual growth rate of 4.6%.

Exports potato from ECOWAS

ECOWAS's potato exports have risen for the third year in a row. In 2020, the region exported 1.7 thousand tonnes of potatoes, showing a modest increase of 7.7% from 2019. From 2017 to 2020, exports surged by 707.7%, with a compound annual growth rate of 100.6%.

The structure of exports in kind from 2017 to 2020 reveals a diverse range of trading partners. Mauritania accounted for 11.4% of exports in kind, the United States for 8.1%, and France for 1.8%, together making up only 21.4% of total flows. The remaining 78.6% was distributed among numerous smaller markets.

Exports in value, K $ US

Cross-border shipments of potatoes from ECOWAS have increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 948 thousand US dollars, up by 29.5% from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports grew by 465.1%, with a compound annual growth rate of 78.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, the United States, Mauritania, and France were the largest buyers of potatoes from ECOWAS in value terms, but they did not dominate the market. The United States accounted for 10.4% of exports in value, Mauritania for 8.6%, and France for 6.7%, together representing 25.6% of total exports. The rest was spread across a wide array of smaller partners.

Imports potato to ECOWAS

After a two-year decline, ECOWAS's potato imports have increased. In 2020, imports totaled 196.8 thousand tonnes, reflecting a significant rise of 25.9% year-over-year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 4%, with a compound annual growth rate of 1.4%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 156.4 thousand tonnes, following the largest decline of 18.9% in 2018.

Throughout 2017 to 2020, the Netherlands, France, and Morocco remained the primary sources for potato imports in kind to ECOWAS. The Netherlands accounted for 61.5% of imports in kind, France for 11.3%, and Morocco for 9.6%, collectively representing 82.5% of total flows.

After a two-year reduction, potato deliveries to ECOWAS have increased. In 2020, ECOWAS imported potatoes worth 47 325 thousand US dollars, showing a gain of 24.6% year-over-year. The minimum value was recorded in 2019 at 47 325 thousand US dollars, after the largest decline of 13.3% in 2018.

From 2017 to 2020, the Netherlands, France, and Morocco formed the core group of markets for potato imports in value terms to ECOWAS. The Netherlands accounted for 51.6% of imports in value, France for 21.4%, and Morocco for 8.3%, together making up 81.3% of total flows.
