Earlier Report Observations

In 2018, pork production in Mozambique reached 135 thousand tons, supported by a 23% increase in the swine herd from 2015 to 2018, indicating an expansion of pig farming capacity. However, production fell sharply to 97 thousand tons in 2019.

Output recovered to 132 thousand tons in 2020 and continued growing strongly, peaking at 208 thousand tons in 2022. Market volume followed a similar trajectory, rising from 134 thousand tons in 2020 to 211 thousand tons in 2022.

Production contracted to 106 thousand tons in 2023, reducing the market volume to 109 thousand tons. In 2024, the government launched a Food and Nutrition Security Policy and Implementation Strategy for 2024-2030, aiming to transform the agricultural sector, including pig farming. A shift in consumer preferences toward fresh and chilled meat over frozen products was also noted.
