Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2023, Benin's pork market volume expanded from 6 077 t to 11 632 t, with domestic production rising from 6 048 t to 11 630 t. This sustained growth was supported by increasing consumption linked to urban dietary habits, particularly the rise of eating out, which boosted demand for pork products through the proliferation of charcuterie-restaurants.

In March 2022, a decree mandating the labeling of pork origin in restaurants came into force, enhancing transparency for consumers. Market volume continued to climb thereafter, reaching 11 632 t in 2023, while imports remained minimal at 2 t. In 2024, the government announced a ban on imports of frozen chicken and table eggs effective from December 31, 2024.
