Earlier Report Observations

The Argentine pork market remained stable at around 650 thousand tonnes from 2018 to 2020. During this period, consumer preferences began shifting towards pork, aided by its growing affordability compared to beef. This change in consumption habits set the stage for subsequent market expansion.

After 2020, market volume began to grow steadily, reaching 774.5 thousand tonnes in 2023. This growth was driven by an increase in domestic production, which set records in 2022 and 2023 with slaughter volumes of 7.7 million and 8.1 million pigs respectively. The production rise was supported by changes in Argentine dietary habits, as pork was increasingly included in the diet due to its nutritional value and taste. Simultaneously, the currency gap and unfavorable exchange rate significantly reduced export activity, leaving most of the produced pork for the domestic market.

The market also adapted to new consumer demands for convenience and ease of preparation. This was reflected in the launch of frozen and pre-portioned products that met the needs of busy households. The consistent rise in production and the adaptation of supply to changing preferences were key drivers behind the increase in Argentina's pork market volume.
