The Croatian market for polyester-based paints and varnishes showed considerable volume fluctuations between 2018 and 2024. Consumption began at 2 061 tons in 2018, rose to a peak of 2 674 tons in 2021, then contracted sharply to 1 700 tons by 2023.

In 2024, market volume partially recovered to 1 854 tons, while in value terms, the market followed a similar pattern, reaching 22.3 million dollars in 2021 before declining to 15.7 million dollars in 2023 and recovering to 17.2 million dollars in 2024.

Throughout the period, imports remained the primary supply source, exceeding 3 000 tons in peak years, while domestic production stayed below 600 tons, and exports varied between 800 and 1 300 tons annually.

In 2020, output was valued at 2 912 K $ US, representing a 6.6% decrease compared to the previous year. The peak value was recorded in 2019 at 3 120 K $ US, with the largest annual increase of 26.7% also occurring that year.

In 2020, Croatia produced 669.0 t of polyester-based paints and varnishes, marking a 7.0% decrease from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, production grew by 5.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of 1.8%. The lowest output was in 2018 at 557.0 t, which saw the largest decline of 12.1%. Production peaked in 2019 at 719.0 t, with the highest annual increase of 29.1% recorded that year.

Following a two-year decline, Croatia's exports of polyester-based paints and varnishes rebounded in 2020, reaching 1 287 t—a significant increase of 62.7% compared to the previous year. However, over the 2017-2020 period, exports decreased by 27.1%, with a compound annual decline rate of 10.0%. The lowest export volume was in 2019 at 791 t, and the sharpest drop occurred in 2018 with a 53.2% decrease.

From 2017 to 2020, the main destinations for Croatia's exports of polyester-based paints and varnishes in volume terms were Bosnia and Herzegovina (28.6% of exports), Slovenia (16.0% of exports), and Turkey (15.3% of exports). Together, these three countries accounted for 59.8% of total export flows.

Croatia's exports of polyester-based paints and varnishes in value terms grew for the second year in a row in 2020, reaching 4 469 K $ US—a substantial rise of 46.8% compared to the previous year. Despite this recent growth, exports decreased by 3.3% over the 2017-2020 period, equating to an annualized decline of 1.1%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 2 900 K $ US, which also saw the largest annual decrease of 37.3%.
