Earlier Report Observations

The fresh plums and sloes market in Central America began the period with a production support initiative from the Honduran Agricultural Research Foundation (FHIA), which aimed to enhance horticultural productivity for domestic and export markets. Market volume then contracted to 85 560 t in 2019 before rebounding sharply to 100 370 t in 2020, reflecting volatile supply conditions.

After the 2020 peak, market volume gradually declined, reaching 75 800 t by 2023. However, the market value rose to $146.7 million in 2023, up from $123.0 million the previous year, as consumer preferences in Honduras and Central America shifted toward fresh, natural, and wellness-oriented fruits, supporting higher unit prices despite lower physical volumes.

In 2024, the sector faced headwinds from the depreciation of the Honduran lempira against the US dollar, which increased production costs for imported fertilizers and inputs. Agricultural output continued to be shaped by weather patterns and grain procurement policies, while surprise operations to curb speculation in storage and transport aimed to regulate the distribution of fresh produce.
