The Spanish market for phenols, monophenols, polyphenols, and phenol-alcohols contracted substantially from 2021 to 2024. Market volume fell from 571.9 thousand tons in 2021 to 177.0 thousand tons in 2024, with the sharpest drop occurring between 2021 and 2022. Production followed a similar downward trajectory, declining from 555.3 thousand tons to 174.5 thousand tons over the same period.

Despite the volume contraction, the market structure remained concentrated around a few key products. In 2019 and 2022, the most traded items were phenol (hydroxybenzene), bisphenol A, and monophenols/polyphenols, with a stable Shannon Entropy index indicating little change in the dominance of major players. This suggests that the market consolidation persisted even as overall size diminished.

Trade flows also narrowed significantly. Imports into Spain dropped from 24.9 thousand tons in 2021 to 6.6 thousand tons in 2024, while exports fell from 8.3 thousand tons to 4.0 thousand tons. The reduction in both domestic production and international trade contributed to the overall market shrinkage.

Spain's exports of phenols, monophenols, polyphenols, and phenol-alcohols declined for the third consecutive year. In 2019, exports stood at a higher level, but by 2020 they had dropped to 10 365 tonnes, marking a significant decrease of 44.7% compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports fell by 75.8%, with an average annual decline of 37.7%.

From 2017 to 2020, the Netherlands, Germany, and Italy were the key export partners for Spain in terms of volume. The Netherlands accounted for 58.2% of exports, Germany for 9.8%, and Italy for 5.0%. Together, these three countries represented 72.9% of total export flows.

Spain's exports of phenols, monophenols, polyphenols, and phenol-alcohols in value terms declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, export value reached 40.6 million US dollars, down by 20.5% from the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 51.7%, with an average annual decline of 21.5%.

In the period from 2017 to 2020, the Netherlands, Germany, and Italy led Spain's export structure in value terms. The Netherlands contributed 36.8% of export value, Germany 13.0%, and Italy 7.6%. Combined, these three partners made up 57.4% of total export flows.

Spain's imports of phenols, monophenols, polyphenols, and phenol-alcohols in volume terms fell for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports amounted to 15 781 tonnes, a decrease of 15.2% compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, imports dropped by 80.6%, with an average annual decline of 42.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, the Netherlands, Germany, and Belgium were the main sources for Spain's imports in volume terms. The Netherlands accounted for 46.4% of imports, Germany for 21.0%, and Belgium for 6.8%. Together, these three countries represented 74.3% of total import flows.
