Between 2018 and 2021, Lithuania's imports of polyethylene terephthalate in primary forms grew steadily from 29.3 thousand tons to 43.1 thousand tons, while exports remained high, fluctuating between 506.7 and 549.9 thousand tons, indicating a strong export-oriented production base for the material.

From 2022 to 2024, the domestic market volume for primary PET gradually declined from 181.1 to 175.7 thousand tons. Production decreased to 596.7 thousand tons in 2023 but rebounded to 678.5 thousand tons in 2024. During this period, the PET recycling sector saw significant investment and consolidation, led by the Eco Baltia group, which recorded record revenue in 2022, expanded into the Czech Republic, and in 2023 issued bonds to finance growth and acquired Poland's largest PVC recycler, strengthening its regional position in the circular economy.

In value terms, the market fell sharply to $183.1 million in 2023 from $268.3 million in 2022, before partially recovering to $194.4 million in 2024, reflecting price volatility. Imports continued their upward trend, reaching 69.0 thousand tons in 2024, while exports showed variability in response to international demand.

Lithuania's exports of PET in primary forms declined for the second consecutive year. In 2021, exports amounted to 538.0 K t, representing a slight decrease of 0.8% compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2018 to 2021, exports grew by 6.2%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 2.0%. The highest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 549.9 K t. The largest decline occurred in 2020, with a drop of 1.4%, while the most significant increase was in 2019, with growth of 8.5%.

From 2018 to 2021, Lithuania's export portfolio for PET in primary forms was quite diverse. Poland accounted for 29.8% of exports in kind, Ukraine for 9.1%, and the United Kingdom for 6.9%. Together, these three countries represented only 45.8% of total export flows, indicating a broad distribution among other partners.

After two years of decline, Lithuania's exports of PET in primary forms in monetary terms increased in 2021. The country exported 621.9 M $ US worth of PET in primary forms, marking a sharp rise of 33.2% compared to the previous year. Over the 2018-2021 period, exports decreased by 6.9%, with a compound annual growth rate of -2.4%. The lowest value was recorded in 2020 at 466.9 M $ US, which also saw the largest decline of 25.0%.

During 2018-2021, Poland, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom were key buyers of PET in primary forms from Lithuania in value terms. Poland accounted for 28.9% of exports, Ukraine for 8.7%, and the United Kingdom for 7.5%. Their combined share reached only 45.0% of total exports, with the remaining 55.0% distributed among numerous other trading partners.

Between 2018 and 2021, imports grew by 47.4%, equating to an average annual growth rate of 13.8%. The largest decline occurred in 2020, with a decrease of 3.7%, while the most significant increase was in 2019, with growth of 29.2%.

From 2018 to 2021, Germany, Latvia, and Sweden formed the core group of partners for Lithuania's imports of PET in primary forms in kind. Germany accounted for 27.7% of imports, Latvia for 21.2%, and Sweden for 17.5%. Together, these three countries represented 66.3% of total import flows.

Over the 2018-2021 period, imports grew by 59.4%, with an average annual growth rate of 16.8%. The largest decline was recorded in 2020, with a decrease of 13.5%.

Throughout 2018-2021, Germany, Latvia, and Sweden were the primary partners for Lithuania's imports of PET in primary forms in value terms. Germany accounted for 27.8% of imports, Latvia for 21.5%, and Sweden for 15.9%. Their combined share represented 65.2% of total import flows.
