Earlier Report Observations

Beginning in 2018, Norwegian authorities developed plans to phase out the extraction and use of peat to reduce environmental impact, stimulating the development of substitute products. This regulatory shift laid the groundwork for market transformation, even as production of peat articles in volume terms more than doubled to 84 162 t by 2020, with market size reaching 81 787 t.

Growth continued through 2022, with production hitting 92 218 t and the market expanding to 90 834 t. That year, the government announced a ban on new peat extraction to cut greenhouse gas emissions and preserve biodiversity, accelerating the shift towards peat-free alternatives. New market entrants, such as Grønn Vekst, expanded the availability of growing media made from sustainable materials like coconut fiber, bark, and compost.

In value terms, the market peaked at 50.8 million USD in 2020 before declining to 38.3 million USD by 2023. This drop in market value coincided with rising consumer demand for sustainable and eco-friendly products, driving a structural shift toward more affordable peat-free alternatives and altering the product mix.
