Earlier Report Observations

The Canadian peaches and nectarines market saw the entry of a new commercial producer in Quebec in 2018, with Domaine de Dunham beginning significant local production. Favorable winter conditions in 2019 supported abundant harvests for this grower, contributing to supply diversification. However, overall production declined from 28 339 t in 2018 to 26 297 t in 2019, and market volume fell sharply to 60 399 t in 2020.

Production recovered to 23 730 t in 2021, helping market volume reach 64 990 t. The market then contracted over the next two years, with volume dropping to 59 657 t in 2022 and 53 194 t in 2023. Imports, which had peaked at 41 387 t in 2021, decreased to 27 736 t by 2023.

In 2024, severe freezing events in British Columbia and Ontario devastated local peach and nectarine production, while Quebec reported ideal growing conditions and record fruit output. This supply disruption led to a surge in imports to 37 494 t. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency reinforced phytosanitary controls on imports and domestic movement of these fruits in British Columbia.
