The paddy rice market in El Salvador showed considerable fluctuations in volume between 2018 and 2023, ranging from a high of 111 405 tons in 2022 to a low of 100 568 tons in 2023. Overall consumption remained above 100 000 tons annually, with the 2022 peak representing an 8.9% increase from the previous year.

Domestic production of paddy rice fell sharply over the period, declining from 27 603 tons in 2019 to just 11 000 tons in 2023 – a drop of more than 60%. This contraction was offset by large and volatile imports, which supplied the bulk of the market, ranging from 74 085 tons in 2019 to 98 353 tons in 2022.

Exports of paddy rice were minimal throughout most of the period, with no recorded shipments in 2019–2021. A temporary rise to 4 661 tons in 2023 coincided with a smaller market volume that year. For 2024 and 2025, import volumes remained above 70 000 tons, though production data for those years are not available to calculate total market size.

El Salvador's paddy rice production has declined for the second year in a row. In 2021, the country produced 19 146 tons, which represents an 18.5% decrease compared to the previous year. Looking at the period from 2018 to 2021, production fell by 15.9%, averaging an annual decline of 5.6%. The highest production level was recorded in 2019 at 27 603 tons, which also saw the largest year-over-year increase of 21.3%.

El Salvador's paddy rice imports have increased for the second consecutive year. In 2021, imports reached 83 125 tons, marking a moderate 4.4% rise from 2020. Over the 2018-2021 period, imports decreased by 5%, with an average annual decline of 1.7%. The lowest import volume was in 2019 at 74 085 tons, which also experienced the largest drop of 15.3%. In contrast, 2020 saw the biggest increase of 7.5%.

From 2018 to 2021, the United States was the primary supplier of paddy rice to El Salvador, accounting for 89.3% of total imports in volume. The remaining imports came from a diverse group of other countries.

Between 2018 and 2021, imports decreased by 2.3%, averaging an annual decline of 0.8%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 23 284 thousand US dollars, which saw the sharpest drop of 28.0%. The largest increase occurred in 2020, with a 21.6% rise.
