Earlier Report Observations

The Italian market for organo-sulphur compounds began the period at 49 778 t in 2018, supported by regulatory confirmation for the use of sulphur-based products in organic farming under Decreto Ministeriale 6793 del 2018 and the introduction of new organo-mineral fertilizers by companies like Unimer. However, market volume contracted to 46 626 t in 2019 and further to 38 879 t by 2020.

The market continued to decline, reaching 37 323 t in 2022, reflecting a broader long-term contraction in Italy's organo-mineral fertilizer sector, which saw a 49.3% drop in distributed volumes between 2000 and 2023. This period also coincided with the implementation of the new EU fertilizer regulation (Regulation EU 2019/1009), which altered the rules for sulphur-containing products. By 2024, the market recovered to 41 433 t, aided by updated integrated production protocols that allowed the use of sulphur and calcium polysulfide in viticulture and the launch of new sulphur-containing fertilizer formulations by Italian suppliers.
