This contraction in market size coincided with similar decreases in production, imports, and exports. Production fell from 150.2 thousand tons in 2018 to 70.1 thousand tons in 2024. Exports declined from 144.7 thousand tons to 96.0 thousand tons over the same period, while imports reduced from 77.2 thousand tons to 57.4 thousand tons, albeit with some annual volatility.

In 2024, the German Chemical Industry Association (VCI) reported on production volumes for selected inorganic basic chemicals, indicating continued industry oversight and the sustained importance of this chemical sector in Germany.
