Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the fresh or chilled onions and shallots market in MERCOSUR experienced moderate fluctuations, with volume rising to 2.39 million tonnes in 2019 before contracting to 2.30 million tonnes in 2020.

The market recovered to 2.34 million tonnes in 2021, a year in which global seed genetics leader Enza Zaden maintained its active presence in Brazil, supplying a full portfolio of seeds for various growing windows. Market volume then jumped significantly to a peak of 2.46 million tonnes in 2022. In 2023, favorable weather conditions in key Brazilian producing regions such as São Paulo, Minas Gerais, and Goiás led to higher yields and increased domestic production. This surge in supply, however, coincided with a sharp reduction in import volumes, contributing to a slight market contraction to 2.42 million tonnes.

Early indicators for 2024 show a 44% increase in the harvest in Brazil's Paraná state compared to the previous cycle, alongside record import volumes—particularly from Argentina—to meet sustained demand, maintaining downward pressure on wholesale prices.
