Earlier Report Observations

The market for fresh or chilled onions and shallots in Eastern Africa expanded from around 1.8 million tonnes in 2018 to over 2.4 million tonnes in 2022, reflecting steady growth in production and consumption. However, in 2023, the market volume contracted to approximately 2.2 million tonnes. This decline was primarily driven by severe floods and climate change-related supply chain disruptions that damaged onion farms and hindered transportation, leading to reduced output.

Government policies under President Samia Suluhu Hassan aimed at boosting horticultural exports contributed to a 44% increase in overseas sales after the COVID-19 pandemic, supporting the market. The agricultural budget was significantly increased to enhance crop production resilience. Nevertheless, persistent infrastructure challenges, such as poor road conditions and inadequate storage, exacerbated post-harvest losses and price volatility.
