Earlier Report Observations
The olive market in Algeria experienced notable volatility in both volume and value from 2018 to 2023. Market volume increased from 861 thousand tonnes in 2018 to a high of 1 079 thousand tonnes in 2020, then contracted sharply to 705 thousand tonnes in 2021 before partially recovering to 913 thousand tonnes by 2023. This pattern was largely shaped by two opposing forces: sustained government efforts to expand olive cultivation and recurrent adverse climatic events.
The dramatic 35% volume drop in 2021 was primarily caused by severe drought and extreme temperatures, which significantly reduced olive yields. Market recovery in 2022 and 2023 was supported by the continuation of state planting programs aimed at increasing irrigated areas and establishing intensive olive groves. Simultaneously, shifting consumer preferences towards locally produced goods, driven by inflation affecting imported oils, provided additional support for domestic market volume.
Throughout the period, underlying production capacity was strengthened by long-term initiatives to modernize the sector and plant millions of new olive trees. However, persistent climatic challenges, including droughts and temperature extremes, introduced repeated volatility, reflected in market value swinging from USD 2.3 billion in 2020 down to USD 1.1 billion in 2022.
