This increased import flow contributed to a market volume of 7 757 t in 2021. The growth continued into 2022, with the market expanding to 8 261 t, driven significantly by the widespread availability of soybean oil—rich in linoleic acid—within the Spanish feed industry, which boosted consumption of these fatty acids as raw materials.

In 2023, the market contracted to 5 679 t. By 2024, it partially recovered to 6 451 t, supported by active international trade in these products. Throughout the period, scientific research in Spain on the genetic determination of oleic and linoleic acid content in olive oil influenced quality perceptions and preferences, adding a layer of sophistication to market dynamics.

In 2020, Spain exported 1 418 tonnes of these products, marking a 13.9% decrease compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports fell by 38.5%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of -15.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, Spain's exports of oleic, linoleic, and linolenic acids, their salts and esters, in kind, were not heavily concentrated. France accounted for 21.8% of exports in kind, Germany for 13.9%, and the Netherlands for 13.7%. Together, these three countries captured only 49.3% of total export flows.

The largest decline occurred in 2019, with a drop of 31.1%, while the largest increase was in 2018, at 6.0%.

Throughout 2017–2020, Italy, Germany, and Belgium formed the core group of markets for Spain's imports in kind of oleic, linoleic, and linolenic acids, their salts and esters. Italy accounted for 57.1% of imports in kind, Germany for 12.5%, and Belgium for 11.7%. Together, these three countries represented 81.2% of total import flows.
