Earlier Report Observations

The market volume for oil seeds and oleaginous fruits in Niger increased from 41 866 metric tons in 2018 to 44 535 metric tons in 2020. This growth was supported by the 2018 decree adopting a fertilizer sector reform plan, which aimed to ensure sufficient, affordable, and timely access to quality fertilizers nationwide. The liberalization of the fertilizer sector from 2020 onward triggered a substantial rise in imports by private operators, enhancing input supply and supporting oil seed production.

After peaking in 2020, the market volume contracted to 43 377 metric tons in 2021. It then stabilized around 43 428 metric tons in 2022 as the private sector's role in fertilizer imports continued to expand and the technical oversight structures established by the reform were further strengthened.

A modest recovery to 43 899 metric tons occurred in 2023. This uptick coincided with the government's deployment of cloud-seeding aircraft to generate artificial rainfall over agricultural land, countering prolonged drought conditions. The organization of the 15th agricultural fair for market gardeners in the Agadez region also promoted local production and contributed to sector activity.
